If you are thinking about being at Batu Caves for it, now is the right time to think about it, because the practical decisions get harder the closer you leave it. Over a million devotees and spectators pass through the site across the festival period. Hotels in central Kuala Lumpur fill, roads around Gombak clog, and the KTM Komuter runs extra services that are still standing room only. None of that is a reason to stay away. It is a reason to plan. ## What you are actually going to see Thaipusam honours Lord Murugan, and at Batu Caves it centres on the climb up the 272 steps to the shrine in Temple Cave. Devotees arrive after weeks of fasting and prayer, carrying offerings. Some carry a **paal kudam**, a pot of milk balanced on the head. It is also, and this matters, an act of worship rather than a spectacle laid on for visitors. Everything about how you behave on the day should follow from that. > **The honest framing** > > Thaipusam is not the day to see Batu Caves. It is the day to see Thaipusam. If you want the caves themselves, come on an ordinary weekday morning as well. ## Timing your visit The procession runs through the night and into the following morning. The intensity peaks overnight and in the pre-dawn hours, which is also when the atmosphere is strongest. If you can manage a very early start, go before dawn. By mid-morning the crowd is at its densest, the heat has arrived, and movement on the staircase slows to a standing queue. Ask before photographing anyone closely, particularly a devotee carrying kavadi. Give way to anyone bearing an offering. Keep your voice down near the shrines and follow the temple volunteers, who are managing an enormous crowd in a sacred space.
