Just do not treat the forecourt as a photo studio while people around you are worshipping. ## Who Lord Murugan is Murugan, also called Kartikeya, Skanda and Subramaniam, is a Tamil Hindu deity: the god of war and victory, son of Shiva and Parvati. He is especially important to Tamil communities, and Batu Caves is one of the most significant Murugan temples outside India. The spear he holds is the Vel. In the story, Parvati gives it to him to defeat the demon Soorapadman, and it stands for the destruction of ignorance as much as of an enemy. That is why the Vel turns up everywhere at Batu Caves: carried by devotees during Thaipusam, set into shrines, worked into the temple decoration.
